Soroptimist International - Thames Valley
The Club's Charities for 2010 - 2011:
"Project Sierra", "Rosie's Rice Field" and "Lori's Books"
Project Sierra - “A Family and a Future” - the Soroptimist International Quadrennial Project for 2007-11 is a partnersip with Hope and Homes for Chidren in Sierra Leone which aims to raise over £1 million to transform the lives of some of the most deprived women and chidren in the world.
You can find out more about it at: Project Sierra
Rosie's Rice Field is a project organised in Sierra Leone by one of our club members, for women in villages to grow rice, peanuts, sweet potatoes and casava, both for their own consumption, and to sell. Rice is the staple food in Sierra Leone, and there is always a market for it. The money raised can, among other things, be used to send girls to school.
Lori's Build on Books Project is a second project organised in Sierra Leone by one of our club members. Lori collects and takes books to Sierra Leone for distribution to the villages. She says It is difficult to give an exact number of books sent out so far, but it is certainly well in excess of 200,000. We will have sent nearly 300,000 by Christmas and have almost 150 school libraries.

Another Charity which we support all the time, is Women's Refuges somewhere in Buckinghamshire. We don't know where these refuges are; we give parcels to a central distribution point.
We send gifts of toiletries during the year*, and larger parcels for Christmas - click here to see a recent Christmas gift packing evening. So often the children of these women receive gifts, but not the women themselves. Also, when the women leave home, they only think of taking things for their children, and for themselves only have the clothes they are wearing.
* We put together two boxes every month. These boxes contain: Towel, Flannel/sponge, Soap, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Shampoo/conditioner, Shower gel, Comb/hair brush, Deodorant/Anti perspirant, Cleanser/tonic, Moisturiser, Nail file/emery board, Cotton wool pads, Tissues, Knickers [med. size], and various other items.
