Soroptimist International - Thames Valley

A Visit to the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre at the Mount Vernon Hospital

Soroptimist International of Thames Valley recently hosted a meeting for the Soroptimist London Chilterns Region at the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre at the Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood. From the morning, when Regional President Johanna, also a member of the Thames Valley club, led the business meeting in a timely manner, to the excellent lunch followed by a tour of the Cancer treatment centre and information support, it was an eye-opening event for those who have fortunately avoided what many women and men have experienced.

The Macmillan Centre has been open since 1992 and provides support, information, care and complimentary therapies to relieve stress, aid relaxation and reduce anxiety. It offers a relaxing peaceful environment for people affected by cancer to seek all aspects of information about the disease, from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. It also offers support to the extended family. Its treatment area is beautifully light and encourages patients to share their treatments and progress.

There is no charge for its services. Originally fund-matched by the Macmillan charity, the centre is now funded partly by the local hospitals but mainly by donations and fund raising. Through such vital contributions, patients and their friends and families will be supported through their journey with cancer.

Smarties Presentation

Members of SI Thames Valley had prepared a wonderful cold buffet lunch and after the tour members from the many clubs in the Region were offered tea and cakes, some of which were Smarties buns shown in the photograph, sold in aid of President Johanna's challenge to fill a Smarties tube with 20p pieces in a significant way and raise more money for such a worthy cause.
